Yes — you need TRX to send USDT TRC20. This is the single most common question new TRON users ask. Even if your wallet holds USDT, the network requires TRX for the energy and bandwidth consumed by each transaction.

Why TRX is Required

TRON uses a resource model with two components:

  • Energy: Consumed by smart contract interactions, including every USDT TRC20 transfer. Each USDT transfer uses approximately 65,000 energy units.
  • Bandwidth: Consumed by every transaction on TRON. Standard transfers use ~268 bandwidth points.

These resources come from one of two sources: your free daily allocation (if you have staked TRX), or TRX burned directly from your wallet. Without either source, the transaction fails with a "not enough energy" error.

How Much TRX Do You Need?

  • Casual user (1–5 transfers/month): Keep 5–10 TRX in your wallet. At ~$0.28/TRX, that's under $3.
  • Regular user (daily transfers): Stake 1,000–5,000 TRX to receive enough free daily energy to cover most transfers.
  • First-time transfers: Sending to a new wallet costs more energy (~$2–$2.50) because TRON must activate the new account.

Keep a small TRX buffer in your wallet. Even after you swap, hold a small amount of TRX for future network fees — you never want to get stuck with USDT you can't move.

Step-by-Step: What to Do

  • Check your TRX balance before sending USDT. Most wallets show it alongside your USDT balance.
  • If your TRX balance is zero or very low, buy a small amount of TRX first (any exchange supports TRX).
  • Send your USDT TRC20 transfer. The wallet will automatically deduct the TRX fee.
  • Keep at least 5 TRX in reserve for future transfers.
